12 Days of Liminal
As 2021 draws to a close, we would like to share with you twelve of our proudest achievements this year…
12. Twelve times our design thinking went international…
This year, we’ve expanded our reach across the globe, delivering work in over twelve international cities, from Nairobi to New York and Cape Town to Delhi.
11. 111 people explored how our data is used in healthcare…
Back in spring, the Scottish public took part in our Data Dialogues workshops, commissioned by Nesta and the Scottish Government, to share their thoughts on data usage and ownership in healthcare. Our fictional pharmacy of the future sent participants a prescription of products which we used to support deliberative discussions online.
10. 100% of logistics staff in Bolton who took part…
Would recommend Night Club to their colleagues, according to independent evaluators! This year we’ve sent our sleep scientists up north to support logistics drivers and down south to refuse collectors and NHS staff, culminating in the arrival of our pop-up at Guy’s St Thomas in December, funded by Impact on Urban Health.
9. Nine Lives
Imagine waking up and finding out you’d missed the pandemic…sounds pretty tempting, if we’re honest! Commissioned by the Barbican’s Level G, Nine Lives is a series of abstract audio portraits following nine strangers who are all somehow connected. Listen to their stories here.
8. Eight new Night Club partners
In September we launched our brand new Night Club pop-up at Veolia and the NHS. This new, more mobile iteration has made it possible for us to extend the reach of the programme to organisations who want to support their staff, but need a more compact solution. Support your staff and join Night Club here.
7. Seven new team members!
We’ve welcomed seven new team members to The Liminal Space since January. We couldn’t have made it through the year without our new project managers, Rachael, Ella and James, our partnerships lead, Andrius, our finance admin, Lizzie, and our production and design assistant, Reuben. We’re also very excited to announce Yvonne Campbell will be joining us as acting COO.
6. Meat Your Persona tour locations…
Meat Your Persona went on tour this summer, travelling to Cardiff, Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds, Blackpool and Darlington. In partnership with academics at the University of Oxford, our bright yellow horsebox started thousands of conversations about the impact of meat consumption on the planet. Find out what we got up to here.
5. Five Mindsets for the Museum of the Future…
Following the launch of our research for UKRI, we’ve been doing strategic work with museums to action our recommendations and expanded this to include Science and Discovery Centres, as we explore how they can innovate for the future. Read the report here.
4. Four spheres of social impact…
The projects we are delivering this year are advancing our social mission in four spheres of impact and influence: climate, work, health and culture. We’ve worked with Wellcome Trust, the Natural History Museum, NHS, TFL, King’s College London, University of Oxford, Barbican, the Science Museum, UCL and Royal Society, amongst others, to drive forward change.
3. Three housemates living in a home from the future…
In November we unlocked the door to Tomorrow’s Home. Working with UCL researchers and communities, we created a multi-sensory, interactive experience at the Museum of the Home that asks visitors to consider how we want to live in the future. Read our front page feature in the Observer here, or book tickets to visit the exhibition here.
2. Over 250,000 visitors to Our Broken Planet…
Our collaboration with the Natural History Museum opened its doors in May. Exploring the climate crisis and how we can take action before it’s too late, Our Broken Planet has been so successful that it will stay open until summer 2022. Book free tickets here.
1. One new baby!
Nadine, our legendary project manager, has become a new mum!
Considering we spent the first quarter of the year in lockdown, we’re chuffed with how far we’ve come. We’ve been bowled over by the talents of our dedicated team and we’re grateful to the incredible co-creators, institutions, organisations and businesses that we’ve been lucky enough to work with over the last twelve months- we can’t wait to raise the bar even higher in 2022.
We’d like to wish you a restful break and a nourishing new year. Stay safe.
